The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in the midst of an insanely Western Conference tight playoff race. While no one is catching the 64-12 Oklahoma City Thunder, winners of 11 straight, only 5.5 games separate the No. 2-seeded Houston Rockets (50-27) from the No. 8-seeded Memphis Grizzlies (44-32). At 46-29, the Lakers have vaulted up to the West's No. 3 seed, although they're three games behind the Rockets with just seven games left on their 2024-25 regular season slate. The 47-30 Nuggets are mere percentage points worse than the Lakers for the West's No. 4 seed.

There's no question what the Lakers are playing for, and what their collective mindsets are focused on, during this time of the year: compete for an NBA championship. General Manager Rob Pelinka has made it clear throughout the season that's the expectation, and said in early February in the aftermath of the organization's acquisition of All-Star guard Luka Doncic that the urgency to compete for a title is “ever-present.” Players who have joined the team during the season – specifically Doncic and forward Dorian Finney-Smith – have acknowledged and embraced the Lakers' championship expectations. Doncic said during his introductory press conference, “You don't come here for nothing else but championships.”

The former Oregon State defensive standout played briefly for the Dallas Mavericks earlier this season, starting one game and appearing in eight total. Kelley appeared in 32 G League with the Lakers affiliate South Bay Lakers.
